Blockout 2024 trend

We are currently able to see this trend everywhere. Every time I check my TikTok, ⅔ of my FYP is about Blockout 2024. This so called “trend”, which I would rather call a Gen Z movement, is about finally exposing the celebrities for not speaking out.

With the situation in Gaza being more critical by day, along with the situation in Congo, people want celebrities with big platforms to start speaking out.

The movement has made some celebrities start speaking out currently, but people now see it more as a “survival to stay relevant”. Of course, there are some celebrities that speak out, but not so many.

What Is Blockout 2024?

Blockout 2024 is a social media movement originating on TikTok that started in May 2024. It encourages users to block celebrities and influencers on social media platforms.

It is a form of digital protest that targets celebrities who remained silent about the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict, particularly the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, while attending the highly publicized Met Gala.

The movement criticizes celebrities for their extravagant displays at the Met Gala, which some see as insensitive in light of the suffering in Gaza.

Proponents of Blockout 2024 argue that celebrities, with their vast followings, have a responsibility to use their platform to raise awareness about important issues. By blocking these celebrities, people aim to reduce their influence and hold them accountable for their silence.

Getting On The Blockout 2024 Trend

Whether or not to participate in this movement is a personal decision.

However, if you do decide to join the movement, taking action is really easy.  Each social media platform has a different process for blocking users. A quick internet search can provide specific instructions for blocking celebrities on X(former Twitter), Instagram, or TikTok.

But if you do not know how to, we will explain it here.

How to Block Someone On TikTok?

  1. Go to the user’s profile that you wish to block. You can find them by searching for their username or through your follower/following list.
  2. Locate the three dots icon in the top right corner of their profile page. This icon represents the profile options menu.
  3. Tap on the three dots to open the menu and select “Block.”
  4. A confirmation pop-up will appear. Simply tap “Block” again to confirm.

How to Block Someone On Instagram?

  1. Go to the user’s profile that you wish to block.
  2. Tap the three dots icon located at the top right corner of their profile.
  3. In the menu that appears, select “Block.”
  4. Instagram might ask you to choose whether you also want to hide comments from this user on your posts. Choose the option that suits you and confirm the block.

How to Block Someone On X (former Twitter)?

  1. Go to the user’s profile that you wish to block.
  2. Click on the three dots icon located next to the “Following” button (or “Follow” button if you don’t follow them).
  3. From the menu, select “Block [username].”
  4. Twitter will ask you to confirm by clicking “Block” again.

Why Are We Blocking Celebrities?

The Blockout 2024 movement hinges on a sense of frustration with celebrities who remained silent about the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine, particularly the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza. This frustration stems from two key factors:

  • The Opulence of the Met Gala: The movement gained traction in May 2024, coinciding with the highly publicized Met Gala. Many saw the extravagant displays of wealth and fashion at the event as insensitive in light of the suffering in Gaza. This perceived disconnect between celebrity lifestyles and global issues fueled anger and a desire for action.

  • A Platform for Social Good (or Not): Proponents of Blockout 2024 argue that celebrities have a responsibility to use their platforms for social good. By speaking out about important issues, they can raise awareness, influence public opinion, and even pressure governments to act. The silence of celebrities on the Israel-Palestine conflict is seen as a missed opportunity to leverage their influence for positive change.

Blocking celebrities in Blockout 2024 is a symbolic act. It’s a way for people to express their disappointment and hold celebrities accountable for their silence. By reducing their reach and influence, the movement aims to send a message that celebrity silence on critical issues comes at a cost.

Which Celebrities Should I Block?

If you do not know from where to start, it’s okay. Many people don’t know who should they block first, and that’s why a community formed on TikTok to educate on which celebrities aren’t using their platforms as they should.

An honorable mention is @thatgalmuna on TikTok who currently has 44.9 K followers. She dedicated her time to making a list of celebrity block streaks which you can find on https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1IwEjWiRDTACe7fh9ACbcWIzCV9NllETyqJ0eu7Ob56Q/htmlview#gid=0

On her page, you can find more information on which influencers to block and why, updates on Congo, and other current situations in the world.

Aside from the amazing work she’s doing by spreading the word about the current situations in the world, she is also helping the Palestinian families to gather money to evacuate Gaza.

On Muna’s profile, you will also find a GoFundMe link to Help Huda & Salah Family evacuate Gaza
