There is currently a trend going around on TikTok and it’s gaining a lot of popularity as people are blocking the celebrities on social media. Some names include Rihanna, Oprah, the Rock, Kim Kardashian, Kaley, etc.
This trend of blocking celebrities has got to be “the best thing that happened to the internet” as many people stated on TikTok.
The Thought Process Behind the Blocking Boycott
The thought behind this action is to bring the birds closer to the earth. As the old saying goes don’t fly so high or you might fall hard. In this case, the celebrities are the birds which have so much money that they don’t care much about the world-wide problems.
This trend was inflamed by the TikToker @Haleyybaylee who can be seen lip-syncing to a sound saying, “Let them eat cake” while she shows her Met Gala look on May 7th. Her video already has more than 20 million views.
This action has sparked a new movement being coined “Blockout 2024” and the “Blocking Boycott”. Why? Because this saying was said by Queen Marie Antoinette when she was told that those in poverty didn’t have any bread. This is when she replied, “Let them eat cake”.
The people of TikTok state “ They have a god-like tear in society, are so rich, they are so famous and they do a lot of weird stuff and they don’t give a damn about us”. This statement was made by @itstrevorabney on TikTok. He agrees with the community which is following this trend and goes further to say “If we all just go and block them and don’t pay any attention to them, then they lose all their brand deals, all of their ad revenue and all of their popularity.”
This trend, as we can see, sparked many emotions in the community, and by the day, more and more people are following it. So much so that some celebrities have already seen a decrease in their following.
Celebrity Kim Kardashian has already lost around 3 million followers on Instagram. Beyonce, Rihanna, Taylor Swift, and so many celebrities just keep on losing their followers.
The people are just so disturbed by their presence at Met Gala especially because the tickets to this event are 75,000$ per ticket.
People think this amount of money could be spent better, and they don’t think that celebrities appreciate the people who have been supporting them through watching their ads and other promotional materials.
The Problem of Celebrities
Aside from not being grateful for their audience, there is another problem which many people have been talking about recently.
A growing number of people on TikTok are blocking celebrities who chose to stay silent on Israel’s war on Gaza.
The movement has been quickly spreading on TikTok after many celebrities attended the decadent Met Gala as Israel bombed the “safe zone” in Gaza, Rafah.
Currently, you can find celebrity blocking lists on TikTok, Google, Twitter and so many other platforms. You can find the videos on which celebrities to block at https://www.tiktok.com/tag/celebrityblocklist.
High fashion nearly collided with heated protest on Met Gala night as dozens of pro-Palestinian demonstrators marched there. Separated only by police and metal barriers, the passionate chants of “Rafah! Gaza! Free Palestine!” threatened to disrupt this event.
The intentions of the protesters were mixed. While some aimed to directly confront the gala, others seemed unaware of the event entirely. The sheer volume of the protest forced police to divert their resources, creating a situation where both demonstrators and eager fans struggled to navigate the upscale Upper East Side.
